Inés Garland is an Argentine writer and translator, based in Buenos Aires. She is the author of three collections of short stories and three novels, El rey de los centauros (2006), Piedra, papel o tijera (2009), and Una vida más verdadera (2019). Garland is the first Latin American writer to have received the Deutscher Jungerliteraturpreis 2014 for her novel Piedra, papel o tijera. Her books have been translated into German, French, Dutch and Italian, among other languages. In 2018 she won the Looren scholarship for translators, and in 2021 the Premio de Literatura Juvenil Alandar. In “Whirlpool,” Garland evokes the thrills and perils of an illicit relationship as sixteen-year-old Clara confronts the hypocrisies of her affluent family and their friends over a weekend break in the Tigre Delta.
