Azriel Bibliowicz (Bogotá, Colombia, 1949) is a sociologist, journalist, and writer. He earned his undergraduate degree in Sociology (1973) from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He earned an M.A. in Sociology and Communications (1975) and a Ph.D. in Sociology and Communications (1979) from Cornell University, and he undertook Studies in Latin American Literature (1978) at the same university. He was a professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (1983-2015), a founding member of the same university’s School of Film and Television (1988), and supervisor, founder, and director of its Master’s in Creative Writing (2007). Over the course of his career, he has received prizes such as the Premio Nacional de Periodismo Simón Bolívar, and he has published essays as well as novels. He was a columnist for the editorial page of newspaper El Espectador in the eighties and nineties; he continues to collaborate occasionally with the same paper. He has published the novels Migas de Pan (Alfaguara, 2013) and El Rumor del Astracán (Planeta, 1991, 1992, 2013), the short novel Flaubert: la historia de una cama (Panamericana Editorial, 2004), and the book of short stories Sobre la faz del abismo (Grupo Editorial Norma, 2002). With Rodrigo Parra Sandoval, he compiled the book La Sociología y el País: una experiencia en sociología y periodismo (Asociación Colombiana de Sociología, 1983). His new novel Del agua al desierto is forthcoming.
