Maria Valéria Rezende

Maria Valéria Rezende (b. 1942) is a nun and educator who published her first novel in 2001. In the 1960s, Rezende was a member of Brazil’s Juventude Estudantil Católica, a Catholic youth political organization that opposed the country’s military regime. As a nun, she has embraced and carried out the teachings of Liberation Theology, which her writings often reflect. Rezende has published five novels and three collections of short fiction, several collections of poetry, and ten books for young readers, in addition to participating in numerous anthologies in Brazil and abroad. Her novels have been translated to French and Spanish.
