The first novel by Karina Sosa Castañeda (Oaxaca, 1987), Caballo fantasma (Almadía, 2020) won the prestigious First Novel Prize in 2021, an honor awarded by the Mexican president, Estrategia Nacional de Lectura, the Secretary of Culture of Mexico City, and Amazon Mexico. Her work has been published in two anthologies, Cartografía de la literatura oaxaqueña actual II (2012) and Después del derrumbe: Narrativa joven de Oaxaca (2009), and has appeared in the magazines Comején, Des/linde, ERRR Magazine, and Mula Blanca, among others. Like the character in Caballo fantasma, Karina worked at the library of the Instituto de Artes Gráficas in Oaxaca. She was on the Advisory Committee for the International Book Fair of Oaxaca (the FILO) in 2019, and is a cofounder of the Zopilote Rey editorial project, where she is an editor. She is currently writing a book of essays on Doris Lessing, Susan Sontag, Bohumil Hrabal, and Giacomo Leopardi.
